Long Beach Guardianship Attorney

Serving Long Beach, San Pedro, Norwalk, Torrance, Bellflower, and North Orange County

A legal guardian is an adult who is legally responsible for the needs and well-being of a minor. An individual may only become a child’s guardian by being appointed by a court. A guardianship is not an adoption. In an adoption, the individual assumes the role of parent to the adoptive child. A guardianship is a less permanent relationship. However, guardians have the responsibility to care for all the minor’s needs, including food, shelter, health care, education, and physical and emotionally well-being.

If you need legal assistance in obtaining a guardianship, Long Beach family law attorney Angela Novas McGill may be able to help you. Ms. McGill has been practicing family law since 1997 and is dedicated to providing effective legal service to all clients with family law issues. As a solo practitioner, she offers personalized attention to all her clients and will work with you closely throughout the guardianship legal process.

California Guardianships

A guardianship gives custody of a child to an adult other than the child’s parents. If the child’s parents are still alive, they must continue to support the child financially during the guardianship. Children may still inherit money from or receive social security benefits from their parents while under a guardianship. A guardianship can last until the child turns 18 or the court can end the guardianship or name a new one. Guardians can be grandparents, sisters and brothers, aunts and uncles, other relatives, foster parents, friends of the family, or someone else who knows the child. The guardian decides where the child lives. If the guardian moves to a different city in California, he must tell the court in writing. If the guardian wants to move out of California with the child, he must get permission from the court.
